A point-to-point T1 line is a private 1.54 mbps (megabits per second) circuit between two locations. Point-to-point lines have the reputation of being the most secure data transmission available. With the maturity of MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) technology, improvements in encryption, and the ability of tier 1 providers to maintain entire MPLS networks within their closed system, some now consider MPLS as secure as point-to-point. For two location networks within a few hundred miles of each other, point-to-point quotes are often less than MPLS. Point-to-point circuits are almost never managed (equipment provided and maintained) by providers. Point-to-point quotes almost never include the routers, which are needed at each end of the circuit. For multiple location networks, MPLS is far more functional, redundant, and less expensive than a network which includes a series of point-to-point lines. With point-to-point networks; management, configuration, and maintenance are the responsibility of the customer. MPLS networks, however, are pretty much turn-key. In most cases, the complete network is setup and maintained by the provider with no charge for installation or equipment. Point-to-Point lines are most commonly comprised of T1, T3, or OC circuits. MPLS networks can be comprised of a combination of virtually any bandwidth including T1 or faster, at any location on the network. This includes T1, bonded T1, fractional DS3, or full DS3. As dedicated circuits, point-to-point circuits are always connected and are billed at a flat monthly rate. Point-to-Point quotes are higher than common T1 because point-to-point lines require local loops on each end, plus the distance between each of the two locations. As with all T1 services, maximum bandwidth can be utilized in both directions simultaneously. Applications which are best served by point-to-point include: extremely secure file transfer, voice (telephone), audio and video conferencing, and high quality video broadcast. Point-to-point service is for companies which need the best possible performance and security between two locations. If a network has more than two locations, and any-to-any connectivity is desired, then MPLS is a favorable option. (Click here to return to top of page)

 Modern VPNs

Written by: Dennis Green - Sep 5, 2008

Virtual private networks (VPNs) utilize major advancements in technology to establish secure private communication channels, for the transfer of data, over shared networks such as private intranets or the internet. Currently, the most popular and state-of–the-art virtual private networks are based on MPLS (multiprotocol label switching). MPLS provides any-to-any connectivity over T1 or higher bandwidth. The best MPLS networks are facilitated within the closed systems of specific tier 1 providers. With this scenario, MPLS networks are as secure as point-to-point circuits. With quality of service (QoS), MPLS networks are extremely well suited for transmitting voice, priority files, multiple location audio or videoconferencing, or high quality video transmission. For two location networks, a point-to-point private line continues to be a bit less expensive than a MPLS virtual private network. However, point-to-point lines are not normally managed by providers, so with point-to-point lines, obtaining customer premise equipment, and configuring and maintaining the equipment is the responsibility of the end user. For multiple location networks, or two location networks which you know will increase in number of locations, MPLS can be far more functional, and far less expensive than a network comprised of point-to-point lines. In most cases, full T1 or DS3 MPLS VPNs are provided with all needed hardware, installation, configuration and management of the network by the provider for about the same cost, or just slightly more, per location, than managed internet service. Managed MPLS networks are pretty much turn key for the end user. There are also a variety of options for networking DSL or Cable service as well. As the authorized sales agents for the top 20 telecom providers in the country, we can provide free comparative quotes for completely managed virtual private networks for any locations in the US, regardless of the bandwidth needed at each location. We can also provide quotes for international VPNs (including MPLS options as well). (Click here to return to top of page)
